"...a great teacher is a great artist...."

“I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist
and that there are as few as there are any other great artists.
Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts
since the medium is the human mind and spirit.”
~ John Steinbeck

"...I do not know, I cannot prove."

"Just what future the Designer of the universe has provided for the souls of men I do not know, I cannot prove. But I find that the whole order of Nature confirms my confidence that, if it is not like our noblest hopes and dreams, it will transcend them."

I Love the Olympics

I love the Olympics.  I always have.  It goes back to the days of ABC’s Wide World of Sports which aired every Saturday from 1961 to 1998.  The intro which was written by Stanley Ralph Ross was the best.  “Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport…the thrill of victory…and the agony of defeat…the human drama of athletic competition….”

It was always a surprise which sport would be aired each Saturday and even on days when I was cocooning in my room, a walk through the living room could become a few hours!  ABC rarely, if ever, aired football, baseball or basketball (unless it was the Globetrotters!).  They aired ski jumping, bowling, horse racing, badminton, gymnastics, surfing, NASCAR and those ever-spectacular sports such as log rolling and rattlesnake hunting.  I learned to appreciate the beauty of sports and the efforts of the athletes but, most importantly, I learned to be open to and fascinated by other cultures.  I still love sports and I watch ESPN virtually all the time.  But for its massive amount of air time, its focus on the big three sports saddens me.  But every two years I look forward to the sports that broadcast TV has forced into obscurity.  I feel honored to again witness the human drama of the athletes - the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!

"Olympism is a philosophy...."

“Olympism is a philosophy which, by blending sport with culture, seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal ethical principles.”

“Our philosophy precedes from the belief that sport is an inalienable part of the educational process and a factor for promoting peace, friendship, cooperation and understanding among peoples.”

“We peruse one ideal, that of bringing people together in peace, irrespective of race, religion and political convictions, for the benefit of mankind.”

"It takes strength...."

“Confronting our feelings and giving them appropriate expression always takes strength, not weakness.  It takes strength to acknowledge our anger, and sometimes more strength yet to curb the aggressive urges anger may bring and to channel them into nonviolent outlets.  It takes strength to face our sadness and to grieve and to let our grief and our anger flow in tears when they need to.  It takes strength to talk about our feelings and to reach out for help and comfort when we need it.”

Please Remember to Love

Please remember to love.  There are so many opportunities to show we care and in our busy lives but we often forget or just get wrapped-up in ourselves.  Those closest to us should be able to look to us for a smile, a hug or a few words of comfort.  Those we encounter should be able to look to us for a modicum of decency.  Those we touch in the wider world should look to us for civility and integrity.  The online world does not need to be a place for disrespect and rudeness.  We’re all connected.  Please remember to love.
